Editorial Review:

FUNNY. OUTRAGEOUS. TRUE.

Have you ever wondered why some of the biggest problems we face, from illegal immigration to global warming to poverty never seem to get fixed? The reason is simple: the solutions just aren't very convenient. Fortunately, radio and television host Glenn Beck doesn't care much about convenience, he cares about common sense.

Take the issue of poverty, for example. Over the last forty years, America's ten poorest cities all had one simple thing in common, but self-serving politicians will never tell you what that is (or explain how easy it would be to change): Glenn Beck will. Global warming is another issue that's ripe with lies and distortion. How many times have you heard that carbon dioxide is responsible for huge natural disasters that have killed millions of people? The truth is, it's actually the other way around: as CO2 has increased, deaths from extreme weather have decreased. Bet you'll never see that in an Al Gore slideshow. An Inconvenient Book contains hundreds of these same "why have I never heard that before?" type of facts that will leave you wondering how political correctness, special interests, and outright stupidity have gotten us so far away from the common sense solutions this country was built on.

As the host of a nationally syndicated radio program and a prime-time television show on CNN, Headline News, Glenn Beck combines a refreshing level of honesty with a biting sense of humor and a lot of research to find solutions that will open your eyes while entertaining you along the way.

Editorial Review:

A new collection from David Sedaris is cause for jubilation. His recent move to Paris has inspired hilarious pieces, including Me Talk Pretty One Day, about his attempts to learn French. His family is another inspiration. You Cant Kill the Rooster is a portrait of his brother who talks incessant hip-hop slang to his bewildered father. And no one hones a finer fury in response to such modern annoyances as restaurant meals presented in ludicrous towers and cashiers with 6-inch fingernails. Compared by The New Yorker to Twain and Hawthorne, Sedaris has become one of our best-loved authors. Sedaris is an amazing reader whose appearances draw hundreds, and his performancesincluding a jaw-dropping impression of Billie Holiday singing I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weinerare unforgettable. Sedariss essays on living in Paris are some of the funniest hes ever written. At last, someone even meaner than the French! The sort of blithely sophisticated, loopy humour that might have resulted if Dorothy Parker and James Thurber had had a love child. ~ Entertainment Weekly on Barrel Fever Sidesplitting Not one of the essays in this new collection failed to crack me up; frequently I was helpless. ~ The New York Times Book Review on Naked

One of the best 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. If you have a room temperature IQ it may be a confusing novel, but other wise it is a true master piece.

Editorial Review:

Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic Slaughterhouse-Five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes 'unstuck in time' after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

Slaughterhouse-Five is not only Vonnegut's most powerful book, it is also as important as any written since 1945. Like Catch-22, it fashions the author's experiences in the Second World War into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. Slaughterhouse-Five boasts the same imagination, humanity, and gleeful appreciation of the absurd found in Vonnegut's other works, but the book's basis in rock-hard, tragic fact gives it unique poignancy -- and humor.

From The New Movie: FIREPROOF in Book Form 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A quick confession: I've seen this movie three times. I liked it at first; liked it better the second time, by the third viewing I absolutely loved it. So of course I had to read the book.

The book is a good (quick) read, but doesn't quite manage as much tension and conflict as the movie seems to portray. Somehow the essential difficulties loom larger on screen than they do in print. Even so, I enjoyed the book and I would recommend it to "book people" --- there are many of us!

This is a great marriage-saving book because it can help a couple start talking about their issues. I am also reading a related new book (see below) which has a lot of 'straight talk' including about sexual issues.

Outstanding, excellent, outlandish 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Outlander is absolutely stunning. My great thanks go once again to the contributors on the PNR community boards where I heard first of this book and series.

I believe it is very well written. I love the genre crossings: romance, science-fiction, history. DG has an outstanding ability to delve into minute details (which accounts for the 600+pages) but keeps them interesting and not dry at all. I am not a history buff, so I must say, from the details the author gives about historic events in the books (and there are quite a few and very in depth)I cannot judge the 100% accuracy, but to me it was thoroughly convincing and clear to what I know about that time.

I like the characters as well: Jamie - who couldn't. I don't know what men in 1745 were like, but he seems to be a person who has had his hard share in life and it keeps on coming. He is young and romantically inexperienced, so his infatuation with Claire is perfectly normal to me.
The heroine, Claire is also believable in my book. I personally think it is mainly due to the fact that she came out of the 1945's and not like in other books from the 90s, which made it more believable that she coped with the time travel and all its repercussions so well. Also, she has been a nurse in the war and I reckon that has made her see her fair share of things, which also underscores her strong will and ability to work with what she's got. And her life with her uncle lamb has been quite different than what was probably the norm back then.

If you are looking for a historic, yet fantastic, well fleshed out romance with the "what if" (time travel) aspect and you like following the development of very strong and equal lead characters, this book would fit perfectly onto your bookshelf.

Editorial Review:

Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another...

In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord...1743.

Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire's destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life ...and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Brilliant from start to finish 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I will try to be as unbiased as possible, but it should be known that John Hodgman cut my face with a broken bottle during a disagreement over whether one should be allowed to flip over any Scrabble tile and then consider it to be a "blank." He was down 754-30, and tensions were high. I take some responsibility for provoking Mr. Hodgman with sing-song nursery rhymes intended to raise questions about his virility and ancestry.

That said, this book is one of the best-conceived, fully realized humor tours de force I have ever read. Even parts that I thought would be tedious -- such as his guide to all fifty states, or the complete list of 700 hobo names -- turned out to be unrelentingly hilarious.

So I wear my scar proudly, John Hodgman, because I must admit after reading this book: It was doled out by the better man.

Editorial Review:

What if America's most powerful leader was also its prime target?

Vince Flynn's shattering thriller, Term Limits, soared onto national bestseller lists and marked the emergence of a new master of political fiction in the same league as Tom Clancy. In USA Today, Larry King called Term Limits "a page-turning read," while critics and readers nationwide praised its riveting premise of Washington under siege -- a scenario made chillingly real by this superb storyteller. Now, Flynn infiltrates America's power structure at its very core, in a new novel that places the president of the United States in the direct line of terrorist fire.

On a busy Washington morning, amid the shuffle of tourists and the brisk rush of government officials, the stately calm of the White House is shattered in a hail of gunfire. A group of terrorists has descended on the Executive Mansion, and gained access by means of a violent massacre that has left dozens of innocent bystanders murdered. Through the quick actions of the Secret Service, the president is evacuated to his underground bunker, but not before almost one hundred hostages are taken.

While the politicians and the military leaders argue over how to negotiate with the terrorists, one man is sent in to break through the barrage of panicked responses and political agendas surrounding the chaotic crisis. Mitch Rapp, the CIA's top counterterrorism operative, makes his way into the White House and soon discovers that the president is not as safe as Washington's power elite had thought. Moving stealthily among the corridors and secret passageways of the White House, stepping terrifyingly close to the enemy, Rapp scrambles to save the hostages before the terrorists can extract the president from the safety of his bunker. In a race against time, Rapp makes a chilling discovery that could rock Washington to its core: someone within his own government is maneuvering in hopes that his rescue attempt will fail.

With the crackling tension and explosive action that made Term Limits "a roller-coaster, edge-of-your-seat thriller" (Minneapolis Star-Tribune), Vince Flynn delivers Transfer of Power -- a blockbuster novel that carries us just beyond today's headlines.

More traditionally novelistic, tells the backstory of Atlas Shrugged 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This novel predates Atlas Shrugged, and sometimes reads like a prequel telling the backstory of John Galt's life before he went on strike in Atlas. In its focus on individual characters, it sharpens the picture of pain and painful consequences to significant choices that drive the character's in Rand's objectivist world, so in some ways is more interesting and readable than Atlas Shrugged. It is more traditionally novelistic and less explicitly philosophical.

Worth of money. 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought a used book in good condition. This book arrived very fast and of course was in a better condition than my expectation. I am happy with my current purchase and would like to continue in future.

important novel/philosophical presentation 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In the Fountainhead, Ayn Rand presents her philosophy of objectivism told through the lives of her characters. The protagonist is architect Howard Roark who portrays the epitome of the heroic individual standing against mediocrity. The villain is media figure Ellsworth Toohey who is known for raising up what is insignificant and tearing down what is excellent. Don't be surprised if many of the events and dialogue in this book rings true in regard to current events.

I read Atlas Shrugged before Fountainhead and found Atlas Shrugged to be much more compelling and a better presentation of Rand's philosophy. Fountainhead is still worth reading but is not quite as good.

Editorial Review:

Howard Roark is an architect whose genius and integrity will not be comprised. He has ideas that work against conventional standards.

Be With Me 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Cam Douglas, Hutch Bishop, and Sawyer Pritchard have always loved one woman - Reggie Fallon. They never thought about being with anyone else because she had full and total ownership of their hearts. Her love for them was equally consuming, but she was always afraid that she would have to decide between them at some point, and she knew she wouldn't be able to. Her greatest fear was hurting the men she loved so dearly. The night they all gave into desire, she was frightened to the bottom of her soul, and fled from her men. She ran for an entire year until the night she almost died in the line of duty.

Reggie was a proud strong police officer, and hated showing weakness, but while recuperating in the hospital, she was so grateful to have her Birdie there. Birdie raised Cam, Hutch, and Sawyer, but also Reggie in the ways that mattered most. She had a family, but they never had time, or really wanted a child. From Birdie, she received the unconditional love that every child craves. She knew from Birdie's presence that it was just a matter of time until her men came. When the trio showed up to take her home, she knew her days of running were over. They were all going to have to face the past together, if there was going to be a future. What they did not anticipate was the danger that followed Reggie to reemerge with a vengeance.

What a great new story from MB! She is already a must buy for me, but I am always surprised how she brings new elements to each offering. While the ménage was anticipated, she focused a lot on the more emotional issues. We got to see the internal upheaval, compromise, insecurities, and jealousies that can occur dealing with this type of dynamic relationship. This book is full of suspense, multifaceted characters, and enough eroticism to make you melt! Definitely a must read!!

Editorial Review:

She has a killer on her tail and three men in her bed…

When they jump in to protect her, an all-new bond is formed, one riskier than ever before because now a killer looms in the shadows.
